Prof. Bipan Chandra, one of the foremost historians of modern India has taken over as the Chairman of National Book Trust, India. He succeeds Shri Brij Kishore Sharma.
Prof. Chandra was born in 1928 at Kangra, Himchal Pradesh. After completing his schooling, he graduated from Forman Christian College, Lahore in 1946. He then went to do his graduation and post graduation at Stanford University, California(1948-49). Later he completed his Ph D from Delhi university in 1963.
Prof. Chandra has worked for years on modern Indian history, particularly the nature of colonialism in India, the nature and growth of communalism, and, above all, the struggle for independence. He has also written extensively at the popular level on Indian history and politics.
While his writings are grounded in research yet they have always found popular acceptance among all segments of readership. Widely read, his works have been translated into many Indian languages. Among his significant publications are The Rise and Growth of Economic Nationalism in India, Nationalism and Colonialism in Modern India, Communalism in Modern India, Indian National movement- Long Term Dynamics, India's Struggle for independence (with Mridula Mukherjee et al), India After Independence (with Mridula Mukherjee & Aditya Mukherjee), A Textbook of Modern Indian History (for NCERT), Jawaharlal Nehru in Historical Perspective and Freedom Struggle (with Barun De et al and published by National Book Trust, India). He has also edited The Indian Left and The Economic Writings of MG Ranade. His recent publication is the much discussed, in the Name of Democracy: JP Movement and the Emergency.
Prof.. Chandra began his teaching career at Hindu College, followed by Readership at Delhi University. In 1971, he was appointed Prof.essor in Modern History at Jawaharlal Nehru University, the post he held till his retirement in 1993. Since 1993, he is Prof.essor Emeritus at JNU.
Prof. Chandra has served in many honorary positions including President, Indian History Congress and Member, UGC. He was also the UGC National Lecture in 1973-74. He has delivered many important lectures including Kosambi Memorial Lecture, KP Jayaswant Memorial Lecture, VD Mahajan Memorial Lecture, Heras Memorial Lecture and Inaugural address at the First E.M.S. Namboodiripad Memorial Seminar. He was also one of the editors of the journal Enquiry. |
