The National Book Trust, India (NBT)
was formally constituted in August 1957 as an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

The corporate office of NBT
is based in Delhi.

It was Jawaharlal Nehru
independent India’s first Prime Minister who conceived the idea that, with scientific, technological and industrial development, book reading must also be widely propagated to develop the general calibre of the nation.

A great author and lover of books himself
Nehru initiated a nation-wide movement to promote the reading habit by fostering bookmindedness.

The concept of bookmindedness
was totally different from the expansion of education and literacy during the post-independent days.

And this how
National Book Trust, India came into being within ten years of India’s independence.

Broadly, the aims and objectives of the NBT are as follows:
to produce and to encourage the production of good literature and to make such literature available at moderate prices to the public;
in furtherance of the above objective, to publish, more particularly books of the following types in English, Hindi and other languages recognised in the Constitution of India:

the classical literature of India;
outstanding works of Indian authors in Indian languages and their translation from one Indian language to another;
translation of outstanding books from foreign languages;
outstanding books of modern knowledge for popular diffusion;
to bring out book lists, arrange exhibitions and seminars and take all necessary steps to make the people bookminded;
to establish or promote the formation of regional book trusts in different parts of the country with objectives similar to those of the Trust.

The objectives, activities and achievements of the NBT
are reviewed from time to time and are designed to meet new challenges that arise in the promotion of the reading habit.
